Our Top Five cars from the World Record winners at RM Monaco

RM's inaugural Sporting Classics of Monaco auction last weekend more than lived up to the anticipation of collectors worldwide, with two cars selling for World Record prices in excess of €2m.

With Ferrari and Maserati among its top lots, RM Auctions has proudly described its sale as "one of the most successful automobile auctions ever held."

We already published the top results, which you can see here. But, to help you wind down from the weekend's excitement, here are our top lots from the classic and historic automobiles that emerged as winners...

The 1937 BMW 328 Mille Miglia "Bügelfalte"

#5 The 1937 BMW 328 Mille Miglia "Bügelfalte" - sold for an undisclosed sum

Included in our top five because we liked it so much, the Bügelfalte exchanged hands less than 24 hours after the sale's conclusion for a confidential and unpublished sum.

The car, chassis 85032, is one of only three streamlined Mille Miglia Roadsters with the unique "trouser crease" fenders. With its aluminum-magnesium lightweight coachwork, it is the only one of the three built entirely by BMW in Munich.

Prior to RM's Monaco auction, the Bügelfalte had never before been publicly available, and remains eligible for the world's most important and exclusive collectors' show events.

The Delahaye 135 MS Competition Cabriolet

#4 The Delahaye 135 MS Competition Cabriolet - sold for1,792,000

This stunning pre-war, long chassis Delahaye 135 MS Competition Cabriolet has competed at both St. Tropez to Monte Carlo, and has a grand automotive tradition in both concours and racing events.

Retaining its gorgeous one-off Figoni et Falaschi coachwork and original engine, special features include a red leather interior custom upholstered by the master craftsmen at Hermès.

The 1960 Maserati Birdcage

#3 The 1960 Maserati Birdcage - sold for2,464,000 (World Record)

The Birdcage, Chassis 2470, is one of only 17 Tipo 61s built with a very competitive racing history. Inside the Birdcage is the very best 1960s Maserati engineering.

Its "Birdcage" nickname comes from its unique and very innovative trellis chassis construction, made of a plethora of small tubes between 10-15 mm thick.

One of the most original of its kind in existence, the Birdcage is fitted with a spare race prepared engine - although the original engine was included in the car's sale.

The final auction price set a new World Record for a Birdcage, at €2,464,000 ($3,343,648).

The Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta

#2 The Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta -2,632,000

Collectors and experts the world over consider the Berlinetta to be one of Maranello's finest and most desirable GT cars to date. The 250's beautiful design, a Pininfarina body, as executed by Scaglietti, encases extraordinary racing potential.

The famed British BBC radio presenter Chris Evans acquired the car in 2007, and commissioned a restoration from marque specialists DK Engineering in England at a cost of over £220,000, who finished the car in white with a light blue interior - a striking colour combination also executed on five of his other high-end Ferraris.

The 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet Pininfarina

#1 The 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet Pininfarina - sold for2,800,000 (World Record)

The elegant automobile is one of only six examples bodied by Pininfarina - and this model, chassis number 3309SA was the last-ever to be built.

Among enthusiasts, the 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet Pininfarina is regarded as more powerful and luxurious than the SWB California Spyder.

Recently, the car underwent an extensive and pricey restoration, and won an award at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

It set a new World Record for a Superamerica in Monaco at €2,800,000 ($3,799,600), well above its €2,450,000 high estimate.
