The buyer of James Bond's submarine car from 1977 film The Spy Who Loved Me has been revealed as billionaire CEO of Tesla motors, Elon Musk.

According to car news site Jalopnik, Musk was behind the $861,767 bid for the converted Lotus Espirit, which sold at RM Auctions in September.

Musk is well known for his fondness for experimental transport, having recently revealed his plans for a "Hyperloop" high-speed transport system that aims to revolutionise long-distance journeys.

The car itself was discovered by a couple in a blind storage unit auction in New York in 1989, and has since been restored back to its original condition.
