Mixing old with new... Modified '55 Chevy should turn heads at Mecum

The classic automobiles are rolling in thick and fast for Mecum's upcoming Original Spring Classic Auction in Illinois, US, from May 17-22.

Starring alongside a 1970 Corvette LT1 billed as 'the most original in the world' is a much older Chevrolet: a 1955 Bel Air 2-Door Hardtop.

A fine example of what good research and a little bit of dedication can do, this Chevy boasts a complete frame-off body restoration.

According to Mecum's lot notes, "the builder of this arresting 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air hardtop began with carefully chosen components and [modifications] and finished off with expert execution and attention to detail."

The car is based on an all-steel Oakland California body and a customised Tri-Five Chevy frame with a Progressive front sub-frame.

Under the bonnet is a rebuilt and fully dressed GM 400/400 HP engine for motive power, and polished-and-coated C4 Corvette independent suspension and self-levelling

Alongside its new drive shaft, racks, ball joints, tie rods and universals, the car also has air-Ride springing "for a great ride."

With the above complemented by a new black paint job, new carpeting and a custom interior and trunk, is automotive label of love is sure to turn heads when auctions in two weeks.
