A stunning 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLS Competition Roadster is to star in Bonhams’ classic car auction in Chantilly, France on September 10.
It’s valued at $1.7m-2.8m.
The 300 SLS is a modified 300 SL roadster
The car started out as a standard SL, but was transformed into an SLS in 1997.
It was the idea of 1950s American racing legend Paul O’Shea, who loved the 300 SL and decided to modify it for track racing.
The result (which he called the SLS) was around 300kg lighter than the original and enabled O'Shea to frequently leave his competitors in the dust.
The present lot was built primarily to compete in the 1997 Carrera Panamericana, where it achieved best in class and 11th place overall.
