A 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe once owned by Gone with the Wind star Clark Gable is set to auction in the new year.
One of just 1,400 Gullwings produced by the German company, the classic car will auction at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale on January 19 as part of its Salon Collection.

No estimate has been provided for the machine. Similar 1955 Gullwings without the silver screen connection can sell for between $500,000 and $1m, while Clark Gable's 1935 Duesenberg received bids of $6.4m in August yet failed to meet its reserve.
The strong provenance of the car will also heighten interest. Gable bought the Gullwing at Mercedes-Benz of Hollywood and it comes complete with the original papers, bearing Gable's signature, alongside that of his fifth wife, Kay Sprekels Gable.
"Gable's 300SL is a stunning vehicle on its own, but it's the pedigree that comes with it that really makes this Mercedes one-of-a-kind," commented Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson.
Having undergone a restoration by Paul Russel, it is currently owned by Oklahoma-based collector Robert Howard.

A 1955 Mercedes 300SL Alloy Gullwing, one of just 29 produced using the material, sold for $4.6m at auction earlier in the year, while another of the 29 is auctioning later this month in London.
