1964 Ferrari 250 LM valued at $2.9m ahead of August 15 sale

A 1964 Ferrari 250 LM is among the headline lots at RM Auctions' Monterey sale on August 15-16 with a $2.2m-2.9m estimate.

The chassis is numbered 19 of the 32 built and was bought by a Nevada-based businessman who used it as a road car, although it was later raced on a handful of occasions.

Max Girardo, managing director of RM Auctions Europe, commented: "The 250 LM is an absolutely incredible car—rarer than a GTO, it is truly one of the greatest sports racing cars ever made.

"I've had the pleasure of driving these cars, and they are downright exhilarating. With the V-12 engine roaring behind you, it is a very poised, balanced, and thrilling ride.

Girardo added that the car is particularly special not only because it is Classiche certified, but also because it was driven on open Nevada roads.

"One can only imagine the sight of that throaty V-12 blaring through the city streets, past the typical American cars of the mid-1960s, wearing Nevada license plates no less," he said.

The model is famed for its speed and rugged good looks and was the last Ferrari to triumph at the 24 Hours of Le Mans back in 1965.

In November last year a 250 LM set a new record of $14.3m for the model, at the Art of the Automobile auction in New York.

RM Auctions' Motor City sale in July will feature a rare 1931 Chrysler CG Imperial Convertible Victoria.
