1956 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta among highlights of London sale

A 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione "Tour de France" is among the headline lots at RM Auctions' London sale on September 8.

It's expected to sell for in excess of £4.5m ($7.5m).

The 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione 'Tour de France' was named for the Tour de France Automobilia race

The car (numbered 01563 GT) is one of only nine ever built and was raced in a number of major events from the 1950s onwards, including the Tour de France Automobile.

Since then it has been extensively restored and is a regular sight at concours and rally events.

Augustin Sabatie-Garat, a car specialist for RM Auctions in Europe, commented: "In many ways, the TdF is the ultimate symbol of Ferrari's long pursuit of perfecting the dual-purpose sports car.

"As a result of their extremely low production numbers and, in turn, high desirability, these cars rarely make their way to the open market.

"Chassis 0563 GT is a very compelling example of its breed, as it boasts two top 10 finishes in the very race that earned the car its fabled nickname".

Last year a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO set a new world record for a car at auction when it sold for $52m.

The sale will include a huge number of classic cars, some of which are rarely offered in the UK - including a pair of Bugatti Type 57s.
