A 1937 Bugatti Type 57S cabriolet realised $7.7m over the weekend.
The car headlined RM Sotheby’s Amelia Island sale on March 10-11.
Bugatti produced 42 examples of the celebrated 57S chassis.
The Bugatti Type 57S has a lower profile than the standard model
It’s a sporting variant of the more common type 57 and features a much lower profile. It’s also shorter and includes adjustments to the grill designed to increase its aerodynamics.
While the model had some racing success, this one was primarily used as a road vehicle.
It’s one of only three models to feature coachwork by French maker Vanvooren. This is the first time it has been sold at auction, where it received a suitably enthusiastic response.
A 1995 Ferrari F50, originally owned by former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, was the next top-seller. It achieved $2.6m.
Tyson drove it for several years in the 1990s before selling it.
The F50 is among the most sought after recent cars from the marque, capable of speeds of up to 202mph. It can go from 0-60mph in an eye watering 3.6 seconds.
The lot was sold with just 5,694 miles on the clock.
A 1956 Maserati A6G/54 coupe hit $2.3m.
The car was unveiled at the 1956 Turin Auto Salon and recently won best in class at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
