Lucius B Manning, president of Duesenberg Motors, was the former owner of the car. The coachwork was built at great expense and would be transferred to a new chassis every few years.

The auction house comments: "With exhaustive work taken to make it just as it was when Duesenberg's top man enjoyed it on a daily basis, this striking Duesenberg would be no less enjoyable to drive and show today.

"It has made very few concours or show appearances aside from its star turn at Greenwich, and it is ready to reintroduce to Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club, AACA, or CCCA circles, in which it would most certainly be warmly welcomed."

Other lots in the sale include a 1933 Packard 12 individual sport custom phaeton, which carries an estimate of $400,000-450,000.

The model is one of only five built and is considered one of the most beautiful cars the marque ever made.

Gord Duff, a spokesperson for RM Sotheby's, commented: "Motor City is a staple of our annual calendar and has proven a terrific venue over the years to celebrate America's rich automotive heritage."
