Kendall travelled with the US army to Texas to cover the Mexican-American war in 1851. On his return he enlisted the help of artist Carl Nebel to illustrate a book about the conflict.
Very few were ever published. The auction house described it as a "magnificently produced portfolio by...the first modern war correspondent".
