Herge's Le Petit Vingtieme cover realises $623,000

The piece headlined a sale of comic book art at Sotheby's Paris on March 7.

Herge Tintin Petit
Le Vingtieme Siecle was the first home of Tintin

The publication was a youth supplement that accompanied Le Vingtieme Siecle (The Twentieth Century) and was first published in 1928.

It's best known today as the first place that Tintin appeared in print. The Adventures of Tintin went on to become one of the most successful franchises of all time, with over 200m copies sold in more than 70 different languages.

Herge's original artwork can often achieve exceptional sums at auction. One double page spread of illustrations sold for a record $2.9m last year.

Another lot from Herge, the last page in King Ottokar's Sceptre, realised $449,602.

Hugo Pratt's original cover for The Celts, from his acclaimed Corto Maltese series, realised $433,103.

Sotheby's commented that the sale "will appeal to international connoisseurs and collectors, and reflects the current trend of comics being a new fast growing market, acclaimed as a new form of art."
