A first edition of Esther Levy’s Jewish Cookery Book (1871) will star in a sale of Printed Americana at Swann Auction Galleries.
Esther Levy's book includes advice for housekeepers
This was the first Jewish cook book published in the United States.
It features recipes for classic Jewish dishes like matzo balls, kugel and chremslachs. Equally robust gentile fare appears in the form of macaroni cheese and gumbo.
Levy also includes a guide to running the household, explaining that Sunday "is the day the husbands are at home…something good must be prepared in honor of the lords of the household."
It’s expected to make $8,000-12,000 when it crosses the block on April 27.
