Lee Harvey Oswald letter offered at Bonhams New York

A letter from Lee Harvey Oswald to the American Communist League requesting membership is to auction at Bonhams.

The lot is expected to make around $50,000-70,000 when it crosses the block in New York on June 16.

Lee Oswald letter
Lee Harvey Oswald wrote the letter to the American Communist League in 1963

It dates to February or March of 1963, months before he would assassinate John F Kennedy.

Oswald writes: "Dear Sirs: I have followed the activities of the C. P. for the last few years, and have decided that it is very timely and correct for me at this time; to apply for membership in the communist party of the U. S.

"I wish to become a member so that I may share, as fully as is possible, your trails [sic] and tribulations, as well as your glories and victories. Very Sincerely Lee H. Oswald".

Battledore Auctions in upstate New York last sold the letter for $10,925 in 2013.

The handwritten manuscript for Les Silences de Paris by Albert Camus is likely to prove another highlight, with a valuation of $40,000-60,000.

The sale will also include a signed copy of F Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby.
