Hurry: Up 13.38% pa yet still undervalued

Muhammad Ali's appearance at last week's Olympic opening ceremony took the breath away.

Just like his appearance at Atlanta 1996, and every time he stepped into the ring.

It was a moment that reminded me of the vast affection that people all around the world have for this great man.

I would argue that no other athlete of the last century, or this, has transcended his sport to such an extent as Ali.

But you may be surprised to learn that when it comes to Ali's memorabilia, the market is nowhere near its peak, with considerable potential for savvy investors to earn a return.

One such buyer showed us how it's done last week.

He had bought Ali's trunks from his classic 1975 "Thrilla in Manila" fight with Joe Frazier for $100,000 in April, and sold them on for $155,350 just four months later - a 55.3% increase in value.

He had clearly done his homework. The trunks Ali wore in his "Fight of the Century" against Joe Frazier in 1971 sold for $173,102 in November 2011. That was a fight Ali lost, and is nowhere near as iconic as the Thrilla bout. Despite the huge jump in value, the new owner of the Thrilla trunks has got himself a piece of sporting history with considerable growth potential.

Yet there remains a sector of the Ali memorabilia market that offers even greater value. His autograph - the most undervalued signature in the world.

Ali's signature grew 13.38% pa in value between 2000 and 2011, according to the PFC40 Autograph Index, yet at an average £995 ($1,530) remains hugely undervalued.

In contrast, Tiger Woods' autograph is currently valued at £1,750 ($2,790). I know who will have the bigger profile in the annals of sport.
