Over the past year books, drawings and memorabilia associated with the creators of Winnie the Pooh have been proving to be very valuable. Just last week, a cartoon depicting Pooh signed by illustrator E H Shepard was the pick of an £8,000 lot at RR Auction.
Previously, two lots of Shepard's drawings sold at Sotheby's for a total of £100,000.
Tomorrow, a fascinating lot is going to be on offer at Bloomsbury Auctions in New York: a very rare first edition of A A Milne and E H Shepard's When We Were Very Young. The copy is one of 100 special deluxe issues of the first edition, and crucially it is signed by both Milne and Shepard.
The book is in its original quarter red cloth and paper boards with a printed spine and label on the upper cover. It also comes with a slipcase made from chemise and leather. It is estimated at $6,000-8,000, at which price it seems a worthy candidate for an investment, despite some slight soiling to the hand-made paper.

In the same sale is one of 200 copies of the play Toad of Toad Hall, Milne's version of Kenneth Grahame's famous book, signed by both Milne and Grahame, given a guide price of $1,000-1,500. Bloomsbury's auction takes place on Wednesday, February 24.
