A collection of five typed, signed letters from Albert Einstein to author Max Fishler is to cross the block at PBA Galleries.
All date to between 1949 and 1954.
Fishler contacted Einstien while researching for his book, What the Great Philosophers thought about God (1958).
Einstein wrote a series of correspondence to author Max Fishler
The correspondence is on the subject of Immanuel Kant and relativity.
Kant believed that reality as perceived by humans is distinct from reality as it is, as the senses structure all experience.
In one 1953 letter Einstein addresses this in relation to his work: “The question regarding Time and Space in connection with Kant’s philosophy is not an easy one to answer insofar as Kant’s view regarding Time and Space is interpreted differently by different people…
“The general theory of relativity has in my opinion convincingly shown that the spatial character belongs to the objects of the physical world.”
The collection is valued at $10,000-15,000.
This is lower than other Einstein letters that have sold in the past and reflects the fact that these examples are typed, rather than handwritten.
By way of comparison, another archive of five (handwritten) Einstein letters on a similar subject realised $161,000 at Swann Auction Galleries in 2013.
