Yousuf Karsh was a Canadian photographer of Armenian heritage.
He is recognised as the one the greatest portrait photographers of all time.
Karsh a Fifty-Year Retrospective is a stunning photographic book featuring many of Karsh's finest portraits.
Included are Ernest Hemingway, Albert Einstein, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardo, Pablo Picasso, Walter Kronkite, JFK and Winston Churchill.
There are a total 188 photos included in the book.
Karsh's IMAGE_of Churchill brought him international prominence, and is claimed to be the most reproduced photographic portrait in history.
Karsh explains how he took the photo:
"Churchill's cigar was ever present. I held out an ashtray but he would not dispose of it...
"I said "Forgive me, Sir" and plucked the cigar from his mouth
"He looked so belligerant he could have devoured me, It was at that instant that I took the photo"
This book offers a second, little known, photo of Churchill. One where Karsh describes him as 'smiling and benign'. It is a favourite of the Churchill family.
Of the 100 most notable people of the century, named by the International Who's Who , Karsh had photographed 51.
Karsh has inscribed the book:
"Inscribed for Steve Keyser, with the good wishes of Yousuf Karsh 1985"
