William Eggleston rare photographs auction at Christie's New York, tonight

Here's a quick reminder about tonight's auction of rare art photographs by William Eggleston, the US photographer often labelled the "father of modern colour photography".

Eggleston is widely credited with increasing the status of colour photography as an artistic medium.

The pieces for sale are from a single owner collection, and offer much evidence of Eggleston's significant talent and influence.

Estimates on his individual works for sale range from $40,000-$350,000.

All are limited editions measuring 60 x 44 inches. This is the first time works of this size have been offered by the artist thanks to more modern inkjet digital pigment printing techniques.

Eggleston's prior works were limited in size due to his favouring of the increasingly-outmoded dye transfer printing process.

The auction, held by Christie's, will offer 36 "extremely limited" editions of his photographs. All come from a single owner collection.

"Memphis (Tricycle)" and "Peaches" are among Eggleston's most famous images. Two-of-a-kind limited editions of each will appear in the sale, alongside the photographer's lesser known works.

It is hoped that the auction will promote William Eggleston's important photographs in the post-war contemporary art market, beyond just the photography-only collectors' market.

The Eggleston Artistic Trust will benefit from Christie's auction which will be held in New York, this evening (March 12). What this space for news on the results.
