William Edmondson to feature in outsider art sale

A work by outsider artist William Edmondson (1874-1951) is to feature in the Marjorie and Harvey Freed collection sale at Christie's on January 19.

Edmondson Nurse Wootton

Nurse Wootton was Edmondson's supervisor at the hospital he used to work at

Nashville native Edmondson took up a career as a stone carver in his late 50s, after hearing a message from God.

He started out working on gravestones before branching out into sculpture. Today his simple vernacular carvings of people and animals are highly prized.

His record is $785,000, set for a work titled The Boxer in 2016.

This piece is titled Nurse Wootton (Edmondson’s former supervisor at the hospital he used to work at).

It’s valued at $50,000-150,000.
