Classic horror films stole the show at the latest Heritage Movie Poster Auction, with King Kong battling the Wolfman for victory in the saleroom.
The auction in Beverley Hills, last month, proved the market for collectable movie posters is going from strength to strength - and as usual the rarest items brought the most competitive bidding.
The highest price of the sale went to a 1935 Universal "Werewolf of London" half sheet movie poster, extremely rare and in superb condition, which brought $47,800.

Second was an amazing oversized 1933 Austrian King Kong movie poster, featuring RKO's most famous monster clutching Fay Wray in one hand and crushing a biplane with the other. The poster, described as "one of the rarest of the rare", proved incredibly popular with collectors at the auction and eventually sold for $38,838.
Other notable sales included a beautiful 1931 Universal Dracula lobby card featuring Bela Lugosi hovering menacingly over Frances Dade, which sold for $31,070, and a window card for Boris Karloff's The Walking Dead (Warner Bros 1936). The film was one of Karloff's lesser known, and the rarity of publicity material connected to it led the midget window card to sell for $14,340, beating its estimate of $8,000 - $10,000.
The sale, which brought in a total of $1.48m, demonstrated the current strength of the collectible movie poster market. According to collectibles expert Toby Walne, posters offer an excellent investment opportunity for all levels of collector:
"Although prices have already gone stratospheric in the movie poster market, I can't help thinking those fabulous originals will always hold strong value as there is such a limited supply and we all love great movies".
Films such as King Kong will always retain their classic status and as the recent sales of models from the film show, their timeless appeal can mean success for collectors as well as the box office.
