Van Gogh's Still Life valued at up to $50m ahead of November sale

Vincent Van Gogh's Still Life, Vase with Daisies and Poppies (1890) will auction at Sotheby's New York on November 4 as part of the Impressionist and Modern Art Evening sale.

Valued at $30m-50m, the work is one of the very few paintings Van Gogh sold during his lifetime.

Simon Shaw, joint head of Sotheby's impressionist & modern art department, commented: "Still Life, Vase with Daisies and Poppies radiates the exuberance and passion found in Van Gogh's greatest and most coveted works.

"The vibrant composition captures in sharp relief the intensity of the artist at the height of his mania, only weeks before his tragic end.

"Still Life has remained in the same private collection for more than two decades, which adds again to its appeal for today's market. We are privileged to present it to collectors across the globe this autumn."

Van Gogh painted the work at the home of Dr Gachet, the physicist who treated him during the last few weeks of his life.

Initially the artist was unimpressed by the doctor, describing him as "sicker than I am", but he later warmed to him as a friend.

Portrait of Dr Gachet, also painted in 1890, realised $82.5m in a New York auction in 1990. It remains the most valuable painting ever sold when adjusted for inflation.
