PBA Galleries is holding an auction today (March 18) in which a large number of impressive pieces are on offer.
One set of collectibles which has been snatched from under the auctioneer's hammer, however is a selection of notebooks, letters and manuscripts associated with the US novelist and artist Henry Miller and his contemporaries, including Lawrence Durrell and Erica Jong.
The auction house says that the archive has been purchased by a major US research institution, adding "The literary significance of these extraordinary notebooks can hardly be overstated"
The most exciting pieces are a first draft of Tropic of Capricorn and notebooks containing some early artwork. Roger Wagner commented that he was pleased the collection would stay together and be accessible.
Still available in the sale are first editions of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of the Species and Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, as is a page from a Gutenberg Bible.
