The work, which was executed in the late 1980's, stems from the Mehta's well known series that explores the falling figure. It was this series that won him the gold medal at the first Indian Triennale in 1968 and propelled him to the forefront of the country's art market.
An important piece in this series, the image of the falling figure is said to draw inspiration from the classic story of Icarus as well as from Garuda, the eagle-human vehicle of the Hindu god Vishnu. The work sold for $1.8m, sitting comfortably towards the high-end of its $1.5m-2m estimate.
The sale saw the piece draw close the Mehta's world record at auction, which is held
