Skaters on a frozen river could glide to €12k

ARTCURIAL's sale of Old Master 19th Century Paintings, Drawings and Prints will take place in Paris on February 19.

Among the masterpieces for sale will be a portrait of skaters of a frozen river by the Dutch artist Hendrick Avercamp (baptised 1585, buried 1634).

Depictions of figures skating on frozen lakes were a recurring theme in Avercamp's works.

Skaters on ice are a common theme in Avercamp's paintings

Historically, he is remembered as one of the first landscape painters of the 17th century Dutch school, specialising in landscapes of the Netherlands in winter.

This painting, a fine example of Avercamp's colourful and lively style, carries an estimate of €10,000-12,000.

The sale will be held at Hotel Drouot #7, in Paris.
