Peter Doig’s Cobourg 3 + 1 More could make $15m

Peter Doig’s Cobourg 3 + 1 More (1994) is valued at £8m-12m ($10m-15m) ahead of Christie’s post-war and contemporary art sale in London on March 7.

Doig’s career began to take off in the early 1990s.

Peter Doig Cobourg

Peter Doig grew up in Cobourg, Ontario

This piece is one of a number of formative canvases he produced during this time and is based on his memories of growing up in Canada.

It’s being consigned from the collection of German insurance company Provinzial Rheinland, which purchased it as an investment in 1994.

Francis Outred, chairman of Christie’s, says: “Back in 1994 when the tendency was for cool conceptual art, Provinzial Rheinland displayed a brave collecting vision by recognising that Peter Doig was developing a new approach to painting which gave new life and energy to the medium.

“Standing in front of this work one is taken to a different world and through the whiteout gradually we see a memory of his childhood home landscape and begin to pick out the silhouettes of Doig himself and his brother.

“Up close the thick texture of snow and staccato brushmarks create a tapestry of paint, the like of which nobody had seen before.”

The record for Doig’s work is $25.9m, set for Swamped in 2015.

The sale will also feature work from giants like Mark Rothko and Robert Rauschenberg.
