Paul Henry's Potato Diggers beats auction record by 33%

Paul Henry's Potato Diggers has set a new world record for the artist, beating the previous record for his work by 33.3%.

Paul Henry Potato Diggers
The work is typical of Henry's post-impressionist style and features the familiar west Ireland subject matter

The piece crossed the block in Dublin on May 29, selling for $515,792. The previous record for Henry's work stood at $386,844.

The work shows a husband and wife couple digging for potatoes in west Ireland, and was painted in 1910-1911.

The figures have since been identified as Michael and Margaret Toolis, whom Henry met on his trip to Ireland in the same year.

The work was purchased directly from the artist shortly after its creation and had passed to the consignor by descent.
