Max Ernst Senegal

Max Ernst had just arrived back in Europe in 1953

The work was originally painted on the wall of a Senegalese restaurant in Paris in 1953.

German-born Ernst returned to Europe that year, after spending over a decade in exile in the US. He fled there at the outbreak of the second world war.

India Phillips, head of impressionist and modern art, said: "This extraordinary painting displays Ernst's wartime obsession with Native American art.

“An unusual and mysterious work, it was removed from the wall of a Parisian Bistro and remounted in around 1957."
