Martin Brothers bird jar to auction for $38,000 at Bonhams?

An unusual Martin Brothers stoneware bird jar and cover is to grace the auction block at Bonhams London on April 17.

The eye catching circa 1898 piece is anticipated to achieve £23,000-25,000 ($35,000-38,000) at the Ceramic Design sale.

Martin Brothers stoneware bird jar auction
Modelled with large, staring eyes and a prominent beak, the stoneware bird jar was created circa 1898 by the London-based Martin Brothers pottery.

A comparable Martin Brothers stoneware bird jar sold for £34,100 ($51,865) at Sotheby's in April 2008, suggesting a strong appetite for such pieces exists.

In terms of pottery manufacture, Martin Brothers is believed to represent the transition from decorative Victorian ceramics to 20th century studio pottery.

Producing distinctive stoneware items in limited quantities, Martinware remains very popular among collectors, with their most arresting designs bringing the largest sums.
