Fernand Leger's 1921 figurative oil on canvas, Trois femmes a la table rouge, is to auction at Sotheby's New York on May 7. The artwork, which is estimated to be worth $5m-7m, is offered from American pop performer Madonna's private collection, with proceeds from the sale set to benefit the Ray of Light Foundation.

The foundation was set up by the artist to support girls' educational projects in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other countries where female education is rare or nonexistent.
Madonna commented: "I have a great passion for art and a great passion for education.
"I want to trade something valuable for something invaluable - educating girls! Knowledge is power. Let's change the world."
Eminent artworks aside, items associated with the pop star are highly tradable commodities. In November 2012, the corset Madonna wore during her Blonde Ambition tour auctioned with a 116% increase, selling for $51,920 at Christie's.
