The painting, described as a "tour de force of orientalist art" by the auction house, sold with a 207.7% increase on its $700,000 valuation yesterday (April 24), realising £2.1m ($3.2m). It is now the most valuable example of Deutsch's work ever sold at auction.
Ludwig Deutsch (1855-1935) was the leading orientalist painter of the Austrian school, which includes artists such as Rudolph Ernst, Arthur von Ferraris and Rudolf Weisse. The inspiration for his lavishly detailed work originates from his extensive travels in Egypt, with his oeuvre dominated by orientalist works ever since his first voyage.
