Louis le Brocquy was one of Ireland's best-loved painters

Le Brocquy (1916-2012) was one of Ireland's best loved painters, whose highly inventive work offers an Irish take on European modernism.

In 2002 he became the first living Irish artist to have a work included in the National Gallery of Ireland (a piece titled A Family).

His best known works are the series of portraits of Irish writers he painted from the mid-1950s onwards, including Samuel Beckett and James Joyce.

The record for his work is £1.1m ($1.5m), set for a piece titled Travelling Woman with a Newspaper in a 2000 auction.

John Hoyland's 25.12.74 is estimated at an identical sum of £30,000-50,000 ($42,447-70,745).

Hoyland (1934-2011) was an abstract expressionist whose work can be found in several major British collections, including Damien Hirst's Murderme collection and the Tate collection.

He was appointed professor of painting at the Royal Academy in 1991.

The auction will a broad variety of other British artists ranging from Beryl Cook to Lynn Chadwick.
