LeRoy Neiman, Playboy and 'first major sports' artist, stars in online art auction

LeRoy Neiman (b. 1921) has been described by some art collectors as "America's most popular living artist," and was also the first major sports artist in the world. Neiman is also very much associated with Playboy magazine.

The artist's work has appeared in every edition of Hugh Hefner's publication since 1953. The painter's autobiography, 'All Told: My Art and Life Among Athletes, Playboys, Bunnies, and Provocateurs', is due to be released in June.

The arrival of Neiman's autobiography later this year will likely encourage more interest in his artworks. And collectors will have a chance to acquire one tomorrow in an online auction based in Northbrook, IL.

Among the artworks for sale is 'Khemosabi+++'. Neiman's distinctive coloured paintings and screen prints feature athletes, musicians and sporting events. For this work, he favoured an equine sporting star.

LeRoy Neiman's 'Khemosabi+++' could bring $22,000-25,000

Khemosabi was a bay Arabian stallion who won several National Championships in the horse show ring. Subtitled "the most favorite Arabian Ever" and dating to 1985, this Original Serigraph measures 24 x 36 inches and carries a $22,000-25,000 presale estimate.

The rare artwork - one of just 300 of which just 50 were signed by LeRoy Neiman himself - will surely attract online bidders from far and wide.

And Playboy memorabilia items tend to do very well on the auction markets. Read our special report The best pieces of Playboy collectible memorabilia to find out more.
