Legendary Wild West photography for sale at Swann

The Wild West landscapes of legendary photograph Ansel Adams (1902-1984) will feature in Swann Auction Galleries' sale of the extensive collection of Stephen L White, tomorrow (March 24).

Today, Adams' name is synonymous with majestic photographs of American landscapes.

After years of formal training as a pianist, Adams entered professional photography in 1930 - and was a tireless champion of the medium when few recognised it as a legitimate art form.

Ansel Adams' Clearing Winter Storm, priced $20,000-30,000

Among the highlights of Swann's sale is this Adams work, entitled Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite National Park, California.

The silver print - measuring 15 ½ x 19 inches - bears Adams' own signature, in pencil, along with his hand stamp, the title and dates. The shot was taken in 1944, and printed in 1978.

This remarkable and historic landscape will auction with an estimate of $20,000-30,000.

Collectors and investors should pay close attention - Ansel Adams can command the highest prices at auction. His Portfolio Four: What Majestic World sold for $60,000 at Christie's, last December.

It sold alongside photography by David Bailey - including his portrait of Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski - and Joel-Peter Wilkin.
