Jerwood Sculpture Collection to sell at Sotheby's London

18 works from the Jerwood Sculpture Collection are to be sold at Sotheby's London early next month.

The sculptures were created by some of the most famous modern British sculptors, as well as three winners of the prestigious Jerwood Sculpture Prize. The monolithic pieces will go on sale as part of the Modern and Post-War British Art auction from Sotheby's in May, with a combined estimate of £650,000-£1,000,000 ($1,034,716-$1,591,650).

Anthony Gormley's Insider VIII/ Weeds 1

Anthony Gormley's Insider VIII/ Weeds 1 and Dame Elisabeth Frink's Walking Man are set to star in this monumental sale. Both sculptures share an estimate of £150,000-£250,000.

Walking Man was the first sculpture to enter the Jerwood Collection in 1999. It constitutes part of a series of mid-1980s male nudes by Frink, which were originally bought by WH Smith PLC for its headquarters.  The bronze sculpture was later retitled Riace I and became the first in the series known as the Riace Warriors.

Gormley's Insider VIII/ Weeds 1 is a characteristic example of perhaps the best-known living British sculptor. This 1998 piece is part of the Insiders series, which was produced as the result of experiments with form, this being a two-thirds reduction of Gormley's own body.

Other notable lots include Peter Randall-Page's Green Fuse. Named after a 1934 Dylan Thomas poem, the striking piece was created to sit in a formal English landscape, which it has done since 2005. The Jerwood Sculpture Collection has been exhibited in the grounds of Ragley Hall in Warwickshire since moving from Whitley Court, Worcestershire.

Sotheby's Frances Christie, Director and Head of Modern British Art commented: "Sotheby's is honoured to present works from such a prestigious and imaginatively curated collection of outdoor sculpture. Collectors will have the unique opportunity to view these stunning monumental works in context, before the sale, while they are on display in the grounds of Ragley Hall."

Sotheby's London sale will also feature paintings from Post-War Britain, with Will
iam Robert's The Chess Players expected to bring £300,000-£500,000. The auction will take place on 10-11 May, 2012.
