Jeddah Art Week launched by Sotheby's today

Sotheby's Jeddah Art Week gets underway today (February 26) as the auction house hosts a ground-breaking series of art events and cultural activities in Saudi Arabia.

Iraqi-artist Ahmed Aldousani will also star, with his 2011 untitled piece valued at up to $450,000

The event will see Sotheby's first ever highlights exhibition in the country, which will feature select artworks destined for the Contemporary Art auction in Doha on April 22. Leading the exhibition is Chant Avedissina's 2010 gouache Icons of the Nile, which will feature in the auction with a $1m-1.5m estimate.

Sotheby's Lina Lazaar Jameel commented: "Jeddah is at the crossroads of cultures and it boasts a growing community of artists as well as the strongest primary gallery market in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

"We felt that Jeddah, with its long cultural history, needed a time of year where all the creative forces can collide and therefore we created a platform in the form of Jeddah Art Week (JAOU) to meet, gather and share ideas."
