'Is Russia Winning China Too?' will be the $6,000 question in New York

This unusual-looking artwork will be among the unique lots in Swann's auction of historic posters, taking place in New York on August 4.

By Joseph C Leyendecker (1874-1951), the cover art, made during the artist's later years, is titled Is Russia Winning China Too?

Dated to 1939 and measuring 28 x 21 ¾ inches (or 71 x 55 cm), the work was originally commissioned by America's bimonthly newspaper the Saturday Evening Post.

According the Swann, the poster has some minor creases, yet nevertheless remains a fascinating historic relic of ongoing relations between Russia and the US.

It will auction with an estimate of $4,000-6,000.

Leyendecker was one of America's pre-eminent illustrators during the early 20th century's "Gold Age of American Illustration."

Between 1896 and 1950, the artist painted more than 400 magazine covers, and his work became solidly identified - and an integral part of - the Saturday Evening Post.
