Hiroshi Sugimoto's Church of Light could realise $150,000

Hiroshi Sugimoto's photograph of Tadao Ando's iconic Church of Light is expected to make around $100,000-150,000 in a photography sale at Christie's.

The chapel stands in the Japanese town of Ibaraki, near Osaka. The simple building features a cross shaped void at either end, allowing light to pour in to the room.

Sugimoto is one of Japan's most acclaimed contemporary artists

It's one of a number of buildings Sugimoto photographed for his Architecture series, which was commissioned by Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art.

Christie's comments: "By purposely defocusing the lens and thereby blurring the specific features of the buildings, Sugimoto distilled each structure to its core form in both light and shadow, highlighting the original vision of the architect.

"The Church of the Light by Tadao Ando in Osaka is an architectural marvel, and Sugimoto's image captures the brilliance in which light defines the purpose of Ando's building, as a house of worship."

The record for Sugimoto's work is $1.8m, set for a triptych of seascapes at Christie's in 2007.

William Egglestone's Southern Suite, a portfolio of 10 dye-transfer prints, is valued at $80,000-120,000.

Eggleston is credited with legitimising colour photography as a medium in the 1970s.

Prior to his seminal exhibition at MOMA in 1976, it had not fully been accepted by the art establishment.

The sale will take place in New York on April 6.
