A signed print of Helmut Newton's Shoe, Monte Carlo, 1983 has seen the highest bids in Heritage Auctions' November 2 Photographs Signature Auction, which was held in Dallas.

The print, a typically striking black and white fashion shot from Newton, is number eight in an edition of 75. It sold for $18,750 to lead the sale.

Helmut Newton (1920-2004) was one of the world's best-known photographers, renowned for his widely imitated work with Vogue magazine and others. A leader in the fashion world, his black and white photographs are known for their erotic overtones.

Edward S Curtis' The North American Indian is the greatest photographic documentation of Native American tribes ever created

Bringing the second highest bids of the sale was Edward S Curtis' Before the Storm, a photograph of riders from the White Mountain Apache tribe of Native Americans set against a brooding sky. A classic early shot in Curtis' widely-celebrated repertoire, it sold for $15,625.

The photograph was taken circa 1906, and was published in photogravure as Portfolio Plate No 9 in Volume One of The North American Indian - the greatest photographic documentation of the Native American people ever created.

It was printed using the Goldtone, or Orotone, process that Curtis pioneered, in which images are printed directly onto glass and backed with golden metallic particles, resulting in the three-dimensional qualities that his work is renowned for.

Also featuring was Yousuf Karsh's famed portrait of Winston Churchill (The Roaring Lion), which sold for $10,625.
