Sculptor Francois Pompon’s Ours Blanc (circa 1927) is set to sell for $400,000-600,000.
Pompon's iconic polar bear was made for a 1922 exhibition
The piece is an 18-inch-tall marble rendition of Pompon’s iconic polar bear model, which he built in plaster for the 1922 Salon d’Automne in Paris.
Auctioneer Christie's explains: “Each unique, these smaller versions are called ‘repliques’ (replicas) as they all derive from the same model, however each are distinct.
“…Pompon executed them all himself.”
The lot will be one of the highlights of the June 7 Design sale at the Rockefeller Center in New York.
