Francis Bacon works get first-ever UK expo before London sale

Christie's has announced its upcoming sale of two works by one of the greatest British painters of the 20th Century, Francis Bacon (1912-1992).

The works will be exhibited in the United Kingdom for the first time, having resided in private American collections.

Three Studies for Self Portrait, 1974 and Untitled (Crouching Nude on Rail), 1952, are expected to realise more than $45m combined at Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale on May 11.

The paintings exhibit Bacon's timeless sinuous renditions of elasticised flesh that touch on the human condition and the fleeting nature of life.

You'll be able to check out the paintings for yourself prior to the sale when they're displayed by Christie's between April 16-19 in London.

Historic works by Andy Warhol and Mark Rothko will also be shown, and are also being auctioned at the New York Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale, next month.

Christie's undoubtedly has high hopes for the sale, particularly following significant recent sales of Bacon's work.

These included Portrait of Lucian Freud from 1964, which realised more than $37 million in February of this year.
