Edward Hopper's Cape Cod set for $12m Christie's auction

Edward Hopper's October on Cape Cod is expected to make up to $12m when it auctions at Christie's American Art sale in November.

The melancholic work, produced by the American artist in 1946, will auction in New York on November 28 following viewings in Hong Kong and Paris.

The painting superbly conveys the space and peace of the Cape away from the busy summer months, and portrays a view of the region that very few witness.

Elizabeth Sterling, Christie's head of American Art, remarked: "Painted in the artist's signature style, October on Cape Cod is a large-scale work from 1946, and is one of the last paintings by the artist to remain in private hands.

"It presents a suspended narrative, which simultaneously entices and rebuffs the viewer, creating the tension and anticipation that are characteristic of Hopper's best works."

Despite being better known for his city scenes, this rural work is a fitting tribute to the many months Hopper spent on the Cape each year later in his life.

We anticipate a strong showing, considering the rarity of Hopper oil works at auction.

It is hoped the painting's price will be boosted by a major retrospective of the artist's work taking place at the National Galleries of the Grand Palais in Paris from October to January.

The record for a Hopper stands at the $26.8m achieved at Sotheby's in 2006 for his Hotel Window. His Bridle Path beat its estimate by 48.3% at Sotheby's in May.

Paul Fraser Collectibles will bring you full results from the sale later in the year.
