Edward Curtis' North American Indian photographs lead NY auction

The North American Indian (portfolio #1) by Edward Curtis led a New York photography auction yesterday evening (February 26), when it sold within estimate for $78,000.

Featuring 39 photogravures from Curtis' seminal 1907 work on Native American culture, The North American Indian, the portfolio is considered a rare photographic gem.

Curtis spent much of his photographic career documenting the lives of America’s native population

Works by Curtis concerning the peoples of North America never fail to do well at auction. In October 2012, a complete set of The North American Indian photobooks brought $1.4m - an auction house record for the New York company overseeing both sales.
