Coutts has released its updated luxury index for 2016 and the results are as intriguing as always.
The big news is the growth in demand for fine art photography.
Photography was the fastest growing sector of the art market in 2016
While paintings and sculptures by top artists remain out of reach for all but the super rich, photographs by big names like Diane Arbus or Cartier-Bresson can be had at a much more attainable price point.
Wine was also a top performer, with prices up 10% on 2015.
Musical instruments soared by 16.4%, although Coutts made pains to point out that sales of top instruments (by names like Stradivari) are rare – meaning a couple of big results can dramatically boost a market that, in real terms, is much the same as it was in 2006.
