A sale of early work by Jean-Michel Basquiat at Christie's New York has been cancelled amid allegations some of the pieces may be fakes.

The online sale was due to begin today but was axed in deference to a lawsuit filed by the artist's family, who represent his estate.
The controversy is down to Christie's use of the estate's seal of authenticity on its promotional material in spite of the auctioneer's failure to submit the works for review.
