El Anatsui's Spirits (1990) will headline Bonhams' upcoming Africa Now auction.

The sale, which takes place in London on October 6, focuses on contemporary African art - a fast growing sector of the market.

El Anatsui is a Ghanaian sculptor best known for his large scale sculptures made from waste materials (particularly bottle tops).

This example is constructed from wood, which has been carved and painted with colours and patterns more commonly seen on traditional Adinkra cloth.

The wood has been chopped up using a chainsaw and stuck back together. Anatsui explains this represents how western powers "carved up and brutally divided the African continent amongst themselves, ripping through and destroying both local history and culture."

It's valued at £90,000-120,000 ($116,720-155,627).

El Anatsui's New World Map sold for £541,250 ($701,944) at Bonhams in 2012, which remains the record for the work of a contemporary African artist at auction.

Reservoir (1988), a work by the South African artist William Kentridge, is expected to make £40,000-60,000 ($51,990-77,985).

It was inspired by the landscape of Johannesburg's East Rand, the old industrial area of the city.

Apartheid was at its height during the late 1980s. Kentridge explains that his illustrations from this period are "spawned by, and feed off, the brutalised society left in its wake".
