Beverly Hills auction promises rare and unique Eastern Art delights

California is the setting this weekend for one of the biggest sales of Japanese art and ceramics to ever hit the United States.

the unique "netsuke of a
Tanuki" art piece

I.M. Chait's sales of a collection of Japanese netsuke, inro, okimonom, porcelain, lacquer boxes and scrolls will offer fans the chance to invest in some of the finest collectibles to come out of the country.

Furthermore, the sale will feature unique Chinese porcelains and pottery from the Han and Tan Dynasties in what looks set to be a very special sale.

Amongst the top lots on offer is an antique four-case inlaid wood inro en suite with a parcel-glazed netsuke of a Tanuki.

The piece depicts this Tanuki, a badger type animal from ancient folklore, alongside a carved chick-in-egg ojime bead and carries an impressive target price of £1,500 ($2,400).

The sale also features a collection of 15 antique Japanese scrolls.

At recent auctions, antique scrolls have proven a highly popular investment with some reaching five figures at sale. And Sunday's sale represents an opportunity to invest in such pieces at entry level prices.

One ink-on-silk Buddhist scroll, depicting Buddha on his death bed, under tree cover and surrounded by animals and disciples, has an estimated price of £770 ($1,200).

the rare Chinese Kingfisher
Headdress "feng -tian"

Elsewhere, a rare Chinese Kingfisher Headdress or "feng-tian," decorated with sprig-mounted elements inlaid with beautiful kingfisher feathers will come to sale, having previously appeared at Christies in September 2007.

The piece features seed pearl garlands and coloured glass teardrops and comes mounted on a Lucite case with an estimated price of £5,000 ($8,000) which could well be exceeded.

And arguably one of the most remarkable lots of the sale is a pair of Qianlong Doucai porcelain plates.

Coming from the 18th century, the plates feature coral like decoration linked by green scrolling and a stylised character border.

The doucai pair bears a hallmark which translates to "Made at the studio of cheerful painting", and are expected to fetch between £7,000 - £10,000  ($12,000 and $15,000).

A pair of Northern Qi pottery "fancy" parade horses are also up for sale. Featuring incredible artistic detail and pigment, each horse is adorned with conch shells and bells and has an estimated price of £12,800 ($20,000).

Amongst the star lots of Chinese porcelain, is a rare Kangxi Famille Verte dish.

Featuring enamelled blossoms, with a centre which has been painted over a ground of anhua engraved dragons and flowers with rockery decoration on both the interior and exterior this is one lot that is sure to prove a hit at sale.

And with an estimated price of £16,000 ($25,000), bidding could be fierce for this art piece.

The sale will take place at Chait's Beverly Hills sales room at 1pm on Sunday August 29, with lots available for viewing via the IM Chait website.

Whatever your taste, this is one sale that unique Asian art collectors will not want to miss.
