Although presale estimates are yet to be published, Clearing Winter Storm - a similarly dramatic silver print from 1944 - brought $481,000 to Sotheby's in April 2008.
Adams is famed for his spectacular landscape photography - the result of a lifelong fascination with water.
Many of his most celebrated images feature waterfalls, rivers, rapids, clouds and ice, and The Grand Tetons and the Snake River is no exception. Taken in north-western America, the composition is bisected by the voluminous curl of the Columbia River's largest tributary, the Snake River, which is bordered by rugged mountains and rolling skies.
