Andy Warhol's The Scream makes $342,000 at Christie's

Christie's Old Master, Modern and Contemporary Prints auction in London saw Andy Warhol's version of Edvard Munch's The Scream sell as top lot yesterday (September 19).

One of a few Warhol pieces after Munch that starred in the sale

The sale comes following the announcement that Munch's most famous work will be displayed for six months at New York's Museum of Modern Art from October 24.

The print at auction is a more vibrant, almost caricature-like representation of Munch's 19th century original, which beat the art auction record by 12.6% in May after selling for $119.9m. Warhol's version couldn't quite conjure the same bids as the original, though it sold comfortably with its £200,000-300,000 estimate at £211,250 ($341,920).

Following The Scream was a print from Edvard Munch himself, a woodcut of his famed The Girls on the Bridge. In a lively variation on one of his most recognisable and widely-used images, the woodcut was printed in blue, red, orange and yellow in 1918. Against a £180,000-200,000 estimate, it achieved a 2.6% increase, selling for £205,250 ($332,397).

Also featuring in the sale was another of Warhol's prints, created after Munch. A representation of the Norwegian artist's Eva Mudocci, the 1984 work again saw a unique usage of colour from Warhol, transforming Munch's darker works while displaying his unique pop art style. Valued at £100,000-150,000, the piece made $121,250.
