Andy Warhol's Coca-Cola expected to see $60m in New York

Christie's has announced its sale of "one of the most famous pop art masterworks", Andy Warhol's Coca-Cola (3) on November 12 in New York.

Rarely did Andy Warhol hand paint any of his works, with the majority being mass produced silkscreen prints

The piece is a unique hand-painted picture - an extremely rare offering from Warhol, who is known for his silkscreen prints. Painted in 1962, it is expected to sell for between $40m and $60m.

Measuring 69 inches tall, Warhol has rendered the iconic Coca-Cola bottle as tall as a human as testament to its place in the public consciousness.

The piece has spent nearly two decades in the illustrious Mugrabi family collection, which comprises more than 800 Warhol pieces - the world's largest private collection of the top-selling artist's work. This sale presents a unique opportunity for the world's leading art collectors, and will certainly command international interest.

"At a time when international top collectors are looking for blue-chip masterpieces, nothing is more iconic than the remarkable hand-painted Coca-Cola by the master of Pop Art, Andy Warhol," commented Christie's Brett Gorvy, international head of post-war and contemporary art.

"Coca Cola (3) is one of the artist's earliest works which defines the Pop generation."

Christie's Post-War & Contemporary Art sale looks set to be the art auction of the year, with Jeff Koons' Balloon Dog, another pop art masterpiece, expected to top the record for any living artist at auction. Also starring is a Gerhard Richter Abstraktes Bild painting from the collection of Eric Clapton.
