Andy Warhol Marilyn print stars in Christie's First Impressions

Christie's has announced its inaugural First Impression Prints & Multiples auction in New York, with an Andy Warhol Marilyn print set to lead on July 6.

Andy Warhol Marilyn print
Turquoise Marilyn, another in the famed series by Andy Warhol, sold for an unconfirmed $80m

The sale will see over 400 works that span the diverse field of printmaking, with a strong selection of post-war and contemporary as well as modern prints, and examples from several important institutional collections.

Marilyn, a coloured screenprint from 1967, is stamp numbered 128/250. It is expected to make $40,000-60,000.

Also featuring in the sale will be a selection of works from the archives of the Paris Review, with pieces from major post-war artists that were commissioned by and published in the literary magazine.

Sol Lewitt's All One, Two, Three, and Four Part Combinations of Lines in Four Directions and Four Colors, Each Within a Square will provide one of the many highlights in this section of the sale, valued at $1,200-1,800.

Back at the top end of the auction, Marc Chagall's Hymenee, from Daphnis et Chloe will sell with a $15,000-20,000. Realised in 1961 and numbered 42/60, the work was original published by Teriade Editeur, Paris.

Also starring is Helen Franthaler's Monotype V, a 1991 print in colours, with hand colouring in crayon, which is estimated at $12,000-18,000.

In May, Frankenthaler's Red Shift was the highest-selling piece at Bonhams' Contemporary Art auction in New York.

This week has seen a series of high-profile contemporary art auctions in New York. See the results in our Art & Photography news section.
